In this video, we provide an overview of license plates in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations and explain why they are essential for advanced warehouse management.
You’ll learn how license plates act as unique identifiers for pallets, totes, and containers, helping teams accurately track inventory through receiving, picking, movement, and shipping processes. We also walk through where to find license plates in the system, how to create a new one, and how to simulate receiving inventory onto that license plate.
By the end of the video, you’ll have a clear understanding of how license plates support faster, more accurate container-level tracking in D365 Finance & Operations.

Today I'm giving a quick walkthrough of license plates in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. It's a core capability in advanced warehouse management. License plates act as unique identifiers for pallets, totes, or containers, allowing the system to know exactly what inventory is stored together and where it's located. In D365, license plates are used in advanced warehouse enabled locations. Anytime inventory moves in or out of these locations, the system requires a license plate. This ensures accurate tracking and supports processes like receiving, picking, movement, and shipping.
So, we are going to go in and locate license plates in the system. We would navigate to warehouse management.
setup warehouse license plates. From here you can see all the license plates that are currently in the system. If we scroll down and select a particular one like this in the action pane, you can go to on hand and you can see what is currently on this license plate. If we go back and look at the transactions, you can see the transactions that are also tied to this license plate.
In the action pane, we're going to create a new license plate.
So, we're going to create new. We're going to call it LP0000001
and hit save. The date automatically defaults in. And this is an empty license plate. So if we click on onhand list, you can see that there's nothing on here because we just newly created it. Now let's simulate a receiving onto this license plate. So if we go into procurement and sourcing, purchase orders, all purchase orders.
I've created a purchase order down here that has one item on it right now and there's a 100.
What we're going to do is come into the emulator and receive kind of that into the system onto that particular license plate. So, we're going to click on the menu item inbound. We're going to go to purchase receive. We're going to enter in our purchase order,
a quantity of 10 that we are receiving,
and our item.
Now, right now, we're receiving pallets, but we want to change this to each.
Now, it's going to ask us for our license plate, and this is the newly created one that we just did.
And our work has been completed. So if we navigate over to inventory management inquiries and reports and go to onhand list.
We will add the dimension license plate here and we can filter by this license plate L E0000001 and click apply. And now we can see that this item D0010 we've received 10 onto that particular license plate. Now to summarize license plates in D365 FNO provide fast accurate container level tracking. They streamline receiving, movement, picking, shipping while giving the warehouse real time visibility and control.
