What Advanced Warehouse Management Needs Means for ERP Selection
Your ERP says 400 units on hand. Someone walks the floor and counts 260. Nobody made a mistake. The ERP is doing its job as the system of record, tracking what got posted. It was never built to be the system of truth for what is actually sitting in the bin right now.
A system of record answers one question: what did we transact. A system of truth answers a different one: where is this item right now, and can someone pick it in the next five minutes. Native ERP inventory modules are built to answer the first question well. Advanced warehouse management, directed put-away, wave picking, license plating, cluster picks, is built to answer the second.
That distinction doesn't matter much when a warehouse is simple. It matters a lot once you're running multiple sites, tight lot traceability, or enough SKUs that a bin ranking actually changes how fast someone picks an order.
The pattern looks the same across most manufacturers we talk to: reporting that lags the floor by a day, replenishment that depends on someone remembering to check a bin, cycle counts that take longer every quarter, and a shadow spreadsheet quietly doing the job the ERP was supposed to do. Aprio's 2025 U.S. Manufacturing and Distribution Survey put a number on the cost of that gap: 32% of manufacturers say they're losing sales to stockouts, and 37% are wrestling with backorders. Those aren't demand problems. They're visibility problems, and visibility is a warehouse system-of-truth question before it's an ERP feature checklist.
Two things are colliding this year. Warehouses can't hire their way out of the labor gap. MHI's 2025 Annual Industry Report puts hiring and retaining warehouse labor as extremely challenging for 52% of supply chain leaders. At the same time, Microsoft shipped a wave of AI features aimed at exactly that gap. Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management's 2026 Release Wave 1 adds picking route optimization, AI-driven inventory rebalancing, dynamic item placement that auto-generates putaway and replenishment work, and wearable, hands-free scanning.
Here's the catch. Picking optimization and inventory rebalancing are only as good as the floor data behind them. An agent rebalancing inventory against a system of record that's a day behind the floor will make a confident, wrong call. The system-of-truth question has to get settled first.

A growing mid-market manufacturer can move up that ladder inside BC itself, without a system swap, right up until real complexity outgrows it.
F&SCM's Warehouse management module starts at the top of that ladder. Wave and work templates automate and sequence pick and put work. License plating drives system-directed cluster picking. Catch weight processing, cross-docking, and native Power BI and quality management round it out. It's not a coincidence that this looks like a standalone WMS: the standalone warehouse management system market itself is on track to grow from $3.4 billion to $4.0 billion this year, headed toward $16 billion by 2033, and Grand View Research names the same driver we hear from manufacturers directly: demand for real-time inventory visibility.
Here's the part most ERP-selection conversations miss. You don't have to choose between an ERP with bolted-on inventory and a separate best-of-breed WMS. Microsoft lets F&SCM's warehouse engine run in what it calls Warehouse management only mode: a standalone deployment that acts purely as the system of truth for warehouse execution, syncing over APIs and business events with whatever ERP holds the books, including Business Central, SAP, or Oracle.
That's the answer to the question this piece opened with. The ERP you pick doesn't have to be your tier-one WMS. It has to know how to talk to one.
