Why your month-end close takes longer than it should, and how Business Central and Finance & Supply Chain Management each shorten it at a different scale.

It’s day six of the month and your team is still trying out intercompany. The CFO needs a margin number for the board presentation, and nobody can give one with confidence until the close is done. That isn’t a people problem. It’s what a close looks like when the ERP underneath is aging.

Where the Close Actually Loses Its Days

Most slow closes don’t break in one place. They lose a few hours at every handoff:

  • A subledger that doesn’t post cleanly to the general ledger.
  • A bank rec someone matches line-by-line.
  • An accrual that lives in one analyst’s workbook.
  • A consolidation rebuilt in Excel because the entities don’t share a chart of accounts.

None of those steps is hard on its own. Together they push the close past the point where the numbers are useful. By the time finance hands leadership a clean P&L, the month it describes is weeks behind, and the business has been steering on last month’s picture.

How Far Behind Is “Behind”?

APQC’s benchmarking puts the median monthly close at 6.4 days. Top performers close in 4.8 days. Bottom performers take 10 days or more. (APQC, January 2024)

The gap gets wider when you look at teams that have modernized. The Hackett Group found that digital world-class finance teams run close cycles 35% to 57% shorter than their peers. (The Hackett Group, June 2025)

What stands out is that the fast teams aren’t working harder during close week. They just aren’t doing the assembly by hand. The system pulls the subledgers together, and people spend their time reviewing exceptions instead of building the numbers.

Let’s look at the two Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP solutions and how they can accelerate closing for manufacturers:

Business Central: Closing From Live Data

For a single-entity manufacturer, or a small group with simple intercompany, Dynamics 365 Business Central handles most of what slows down the close.

Period-end jobs like Adjust Cost – Item Entries, Post Inventory Cost to G/L, and Adjust Exchange Rates run inside the system against live ledger data, so there’s no export to reconcile back. Bank account reconciliation matches statement lines to ledger entries automatically, which turns a half-day of ticking and tying into a short review. Posting date limits lock the period once it’s closed, so a late entry doesn’t quietly reopen last month.

Financial Reporting is where the spreadsheet relay usually ends. You define your rows and columns once (income statement, balance sheet, plant-level P&L) and the statements build straight from the general ledger. When the period closes, the reports are ready. Nobody rebuilds the board package from a trial balance export.

Finance & Supply Chain Management: Coordinating the Multi-Entity Close

Add plants, legal entities, and currencies, and the close stops being an accounting problem. It becomes a coordination problem. Has the Ohio plant finished its inventory adjustments? Who owns the eliminations for the Mexico entity? Usually, the answer lives in a shared spreadsheet and a chain of reminder emails.

Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management (F&SCM) handles this with the financial period close workspace. You build closing templates once, then generate a schedule each period with every task assigned by entity, area, owner, and due date. Controllers can see what’s done, what’s late, and what’s holding up the next step across every company in one place. Ledger settlements and financial consolidations take care of the matching and the roll-up, so the group close runs on the same data as the entity close.

Compare these processes side-by-side:

Business Central

Finance & Supply Chain Management

Running the close

Period-end and close income statement routines run from live data

Financial period close workspace schedules and tracks every closing task by entity, area, and owner

Business Performance Analytics for near-real-time reporting across the group

Consolidation

Multi-company consolidation

Financial consolidations and elimination

Which One Fits Your Close?

This is a right-sizing decision, not a better-or-worse one.

If you run one entity, or a group where intercompany is occasional, Business Central will likely get your close where you want it without more ERP than your team is ready to adopt. It can also stretch further than many people expect. Evergreen Services Group moved 104 companies onto Business Central, cut its close from 20 draft cycles to 5, and finished a clean audit a full week early.

If a multi-entity close is a monthly reality across currencies and ownership structures, F&SCM tends to carry that model more gracefully. The workspace gives you cross-entity task tracking that Business Central doesn’t offer out of the box.

Either way, the return comes from the same place. A Forrester Total Economic Impact study commissioned by Microsoft found monthly close time dropped by as much as 30% for a composite Business Central organization. (Forrester Consulting, 2026) That time doesn’t come from people typing faster. It comes from the system doing work your team does by hand today.

Start With an Honest Look at Your Own Close

Western Computer has spent nearly 40 years and more than 1,750 implementations helping finance teams get off the spreadsheet relay. The pattern we see is consistent: the close is where an aging ERP shows its age first. The goal isn’t a go-live date. It’s a close that is still fast three years later, run by a team that owns the system.
